Deltech Baton Rouge Site Team Wins the EXCEL President’s Safety Excellence AwardST. CROIX – Golfers from around the island gathered together Sunday to participate in Sun Constructors Inc.’s Sun Invitational Charity Golf Tournament.
The event was designed to raise money for the charity My Brother’s Table, an organization that seeks to feed members of the community who cannot provide food for themselves.
“People were incredibly generous,” Augustine Gentilucci, regional manager for Sun Constructors said.
The event began at 9 a.m. With more than 60 participants split into two-person teams battling against sand traps, water traps and one another in a contest to prove who could come out on top.
The players never lost sight of the reason behind the event, even as they sought to show off their skill in a game many of them take pride in.
“This is a good charity. It’s the first time they’ve done this and we wanted to come out and support them,” Doug Menzies, winner of this year’s St. Thomas open said.
“Anything good for charity I’m always up for,” said Ken Peets, the Professional Golfers Association director at Carambola Golf and Country Club.
The event was not limited to a golf tournament only, however. Sun Constructors organized several raffles that featured items from 30 different organizations in the community.
“Sun Constructors did a great job to help the community, we were very happy to play in the event,” participant Leroy Peets said.
The turnout at the event and the outpouring of support from the local community surprised Gentilucci, who expected the event to be less than half as large as it turned out to be.
“It wouldn’t have been successful without the generosity of all the companies that came out,” Gentilucci said.
Koop Mans, pastor of the reformed church, accepted the check of $6,500 on behalf of My Brother’s Table.

EXCEL volunteered to help the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) transport the fast growing native bald cypress trees to Barataria Preserve in the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. This coastal restoration project is in an effort to restore the cypress forests, which are an important layer of protection from saltwater encroachment, coastal erosion, and hurricane defense. This particular area was affected by pipeline canals built in the early days of the oil boom; however, the Coalition works to restore our coastline all across Louisiana no matter what the cause including the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill.
Wednesday, December 1, 2010 was a perfect day to individually load and unload each of the almost 700 donated trees by hand. The hard work was worth it, because the park is absolutely beautiful. Once fully restored, it will offer even more opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, bank fishing, as well as areas for motorized boating and fishing. The Coalition was very grateful for EXCEL’s assistance especially because the only other loads made to the area were in individual volunteers’ pickup trucks and small utility trailers, which could have significantly extended the duration of the project. EXCEL personnel enjoyed working with the staff and volunteers from the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, LSU Agriculture Department, the US National Park Service and AmeriCorps, among others.

EXCEL Celebrates 25 Years of Excellence
+ –
November 25, 2008
The recipe for their remarkable growth and success is simple and sounds almost like a cliché: the delivery of safe, quality and cost effective construction and maintenance services to its customers. “We never lose sight of what has gotten us where we are today’” says Joey Myers, President of EXCEL, “our principles are exactly the same now as they were in 1983.”
The company measures all it does by those guiding principles. EXCEL calls their philosophy “Building Excellence” and, as the company celebrates its 25-year anniversary, it takes a moment to reflect on the people and events that have helped it become a one of a kind industrial contractor.
Then and Now
Today’s EXCEL barely resembles the small electrical and instrumentation specialty contractor it was in 1983. “We began servicing our clients doing what we knew how to do well,” says EXCEL owner and CEO Dave Roberts. ‘”We were electricians and instrument techs, but when the opportunity arose to do other things for our customers we always took the approach of ‘no problem, we could do it.’” That aggressive attitude coupled with the addition of several key construction managers along the way helped the company maintain its growth through the tough times of the mid ‘80’s and early ‘90’s.By the mid-1990’s, EXCEL’s services portfolio had expanded to include mechanical construction services and a contract maintenance division. When the regional market was mired in the aforementioned downturn, the company took on the risky prospect of performing work outside of the continental USA. It was able to ink one of what would become several contracts with a major refiner in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The company continues to work for that client today enjoying a successful relationship performing both multi-discipline construction and contract maintenance services. An engineering division was also created during this period, allowing EXCEL to successfully enter the EPC market and to perform (at that time) the largest project the company had been awarded.
By 2000, the company was well positioned for the larger and more complex opportunities that were to develop as the industrial construction market began to experience a turnaround. EXCEL continued to grow by expanding its capabilities and had an enviable resume of hundreds of projects with dozens of Fortune 500 and 100 clients in the oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, power and refining businesses.
The strategy of ever expanding capabilities and customer focus continues today. EXCEL has recently made some key additions and acquisitions that further differentiate them from their competition. The formation in early 2000 of a full-fledged civil construction division has opened up new opportunities. “We believe that a civil component to our business gets us an early look at a project and an opportunity to up sell our other capabilities,” says Myers.
In 2006, EXCEL acquired Bronco Construction of Denham Springs, LA accelerating its mechanical construction offering and adding substantial pipe fabrication capabilities. The 25,000 square foot fabrication facility in Prairieville, LA has increased its ability to provide quality pipe fabrication to individual clients and support to EXCEL’s construction projects. In addition, EXCEL formed a transportation division that specializes in overland shipping of dimensional and time-sensitive loads.
Most recently the company acquired Davies Engineering, a mid-size engineering company located in Gonzales, LA. “This deal enhances our current engineering capabilities and will allow EXCEL to provide larger scale turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for our clients,” said Roberts. “There really is no company our size that can service our clients in a way that we can.”
Today the company is heavily engaged with numerous clients in one of the largest industrial expansions the Gulf Coast region has seen. They are currently working with companies like Shintech and Marathon on their major expansions. “We are honored to have selected by these major clients”, said Myers, “it really validates our approach and puts us in another league.”
Building Excellence in the Industry
With a mission to build excellence every day, EXCEL has been able to maneuver its way through the extremely competitive marketplace and has secured its position as a respected and award-winning company. Committed to its corporate values by providing top-notch services with a focus on safety, quality, economics and ethics — or as EXCEL likes to think of them, the building blocks of excellence — the company has developed a workplace that stands out in the industry.“Providing a safe environment for our employees to work is our ethical duty as an employer,” said Danny Oubre, EXCEL’s Corporate Safety Director. To accomplish safety in the workplace, the company provides comprehensive safety training and fit-for-duty programs that not only meet but exceed construction industry standards.
Additionally, EXCEL employs safety professionals whose only job is to ensure that the company’s standards and those of the clients are met. At EXCEL, the safety program is designed to accomplish one goal — to send every employee home in the same and healthy condition in which they report for work. EXCEL’s commitment to dedication to safety was recently recognized when awarded the Associated Builders and Contractors National Safety Excellence Award, said Oubre.
EXCEL also believes that quality is key to its continued success. EXCEL takes a proactive approach to guarantee quality is met on every project by screening and testing each employee to ensure that their skills are verifiable. EXCEL’s full-time quality assurance personnel are assigned to all projects, large and small, to maintain the high standards that are expected. Additionally, the company maintains its employees’ skills by employing skills training programs that enhance workforce development.
Considering itself as an integral part of its client’s capital investment programs, EXCEL shares the responsibility of managing risk and accelerating return. The managers at EXCEL are selected in part by their ability to understand the business issues of the company’s clients and to execute projects with an awareness of the time-sensitive nature of capital investment, the costs of facility downtime and the importance of a safe and reliable operation.
Looking To the Future
The company is understandably excited about its future. Its expansive services offering, along with the same aggressive ‘no problem, we can do it’ philosophy, make it an attractive option in today’s very active market. Roberts continues to move the company forward as CEO with his vision of Building Excellence. “It seems like we are just getting started,” says Roberts, “I can’t wait for the next twenty-five years.” Indeed. EXCEL is building relationships with new and different types of clients including alternative fuels manufacturers and oil and gas exploration. Many of the original members of the company are still helping the firm grow and prosper. Numerous construction and project management professionals have been added and they utilize state of the art project management tools and practices. With their unique construction and engineering assets and their ability to truly perform turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services on a large scale, the company is rapidly becoming a major player in the region. Building Excellence is the reason. Some things never change.EXCEL’s capabilities:

- Mechanical Construction
