Dean Guillott, Project Site Manager with EXCEL, has been with the same core crew for over 35 years. He has worked as a site manager leading projects nationwide through various company acquisitions. Since 2013 he has been on an EXCEL project site in Donaldsonville, Louisiana.

With his years of expertise in the industry, leading and mentoring others, Dean offers pearls of wisdom to share as he reaches the sunset of his career. With crew willing to “follow him anywhere,” as some have said, his humor and wit quickly surface as to why he is respected and admired.

One must ask, “What makes a leader ‘great,’ and how can outcomes be measured and authentically mirrored throughout an organization?”
 
What Really Matters
Dean believes that family is always a top priority, “we come to work for money, but we go home safely to our family – that’s what matters.”

“I’ve worked with all types of people and some that don’t care about the work.” So Dean has opted to be his own person, do what it takes to get the job done, and lead others to improve their approach. “I believe attitudes can change with the right morale onsite and leaders in place,” shares Dean.

“Personal life happens, and when people need to focus on their family, I let them go and do what they need to do…when you allow people to focus on family first, they come to work ready to work,” Dean conveys.
 
“When you come to work with good morale and share it with your team, you have a safe, quality job and finish on time. It’s really about the people. We work for money, but when I talk to the people in our morning meetings, I think, ‘This is what it’s all about.’”
 
Dean finds it impactful to simplify and summarize the key takeaways of morning meetings. He communicates to set the intention and action items daily.
 
Time-Saving Mindset
When asked about his thoughts on effective training practices, Dean reveals a few tips on how to build employee confidence and lead with less telling and more inspiration.

Making an Impact
Dean gains inspiration from his dad, who worked in site leadership. A moment of silence came over this interview when Dean reflected on his father’s impact. Dean shared that one of the lessons his dad instilled in him is having good morale. “In life, when you have good morale, you’ll be happy – there’s nothing to be down about,” he shares.
